synopsis

A project by documentary filmmaker and self-proclaimed 'urban artist' Els Dietvorst, whose videos, drawings and writings explore anti-utopian themes such as social conflict and survival on the margins. After moving from Brussels to a sheep farm in Duncormick, Ireland, Dietvorst watches her neighbours struggling to make ends meet. This sketch of the daily fight for survival, far away from the city, offers a unique perspective on the myth of idyllic living conditions in the countryside.
À travers la vidéo, mais aussi le dessin ou l’écriture, Els Dietvorst explore des thèmes anti-utopiques tels que le conflit social et l’exclusion. Il y a quelques années, celle qui s’autoproclamait « artiste urbaine » a déménagé dans le petit village irlandais de Duncormick, où elle vit et travaille depuis lors au rythme des éléments et des saisons. En 2014, elle revient à Bruxelles pour présenter au festival une série d’œuvres sur la migration et l’adaptation à de nouvelles conditions de vie. Art-Cœur-Merci, performance qui marque ses adieux à la ville, relate la lutte d’un jeune Camerounais pour survivre dans la périphérie de Bruxelles. Conte lyrique entre rêve et réalité, le film The Rabbit and the Teasel, tourné entièrement dans la campagne irlandaise, entraîne le spectateur dans une méditation sur la beauté, le déclin et la mort.
Documentairemaakster en kunstenaar Els Dietvorst verhuisde twee jaar geleden van Brussel naar Ierland. Vanuit een schapenboerderij in Duncormick werkt ze aan een filmproject waarvan men de vorderingen kan volgen op haar website. Het project borduurt verder op de vaak anti-utopische thema’s uit haar eerdere filmwerk: sociaal-maatschappelijk conflict en het gevecht dat het leven vergt. Ze vertrekt opnieuw bij haar fascinatie voor outsiders - mensen die hun leven radicaal omgooien en in de periferie belanden. Met Art-Coeur-Merci neemt de kunstenares afscheid van de stad waar ze jaren leefde en werkte. Deze installatie-performance beschrijft het overlevingsverhaal van een jonge Kameroenees in het perifere Brussel. In de film The Rabbit and the Teasel, integraal gedraaid op het Ierse platteland, verweven fictie en autobiografische elementen zich dan weer tot een lyrisch sprookje dat de toeschouwer meesleept in een universum van schoonheid, dood en verval. In The Black Lamb final schetst ze niet alleen een beeld van de huidige condition humaine in Ierland maar ook van mens en natuur in de 21ste eeuw. The Black Lamb is de vierde en laatste update.
