The Farewells se déroule dans le contexte des docks d’Anvers. Pierre Wesselmans est télégraphiste sur un navire. Ce navire fait partie d’une mission secrète du gouvernement. Pierre s’efforce à tenir le coup lorsque, chaque jour, il doit dire au revoir à sa famille. Il doit le faire chaque jour, car il ne sait jamais quand il pourrait devoir partir en mission secrète.
