synopsis

After the fall of the Assad regime and the liberation of Syria’s prisons in December 2024, filmmaker Tawfik Sabouni returns to Saidnaya, where he was once imprisoned. Joined by four fellow survivors, he revisits the spaces of captivity and reenacts daily rituals of survival. The film seeks not to reopen wounds, but to restore erased voices and humanity. Through restrained reenactment filmed inside the prison, The Other Side of the Sun bears witness to enduring trauma and honours those who disappeared, contributing to Syria’s reckoning with its prison legacy.
Après la chute du régime d'Assad et la libération des prisons syriennes en décembre 2024, le cinéaste Tawfik Sabouni retourne à Saidnaya, où il a autrefois été emprisonné. Accompagné de quatre autres survivants, il revisite les lieux de sa captivité et reconstitue les rituels quotidiens de survie. Le film ne cherche pas à rouvrir les blessures, mais à redonner voix et humanité à ceux qui ont été effacés. À travers une reconstitution sobre filmée à l'intérieur de la prison, 'The Other Side of the Sun' témoigne d'un traumatisme durable et rend hommage à ceux qui ont disparu, contribuant ainsi à la prise de conscience de la Syrie quant à l'héritage de ses prisons.
Na de val van het regime van Assad en de bevrijding van de Syrische gevangenissen in december 2024 keert filmmaker Tawfik Sabouni terug naar Saidnaya, waar hij ooit gevangen zat. Samen met vier mede-overlevenden bezoekt hij opnieuw de ruimtes waar hij gevangen zat en speelt hij de dagelijkse rituelen van het overleven na. De film is niet bedoeld om oude wonden te openen, maar om verzwegen stemmen en menselijkheid te herstellen. Door middel van ingetogen reconstructies, gefilmd in de gevangenis, getuigt The Other Side of the Sun van blijvend trauma en eert het degenen die verdwenen zijn, waarmee het bijdraagt aan de verwerking van het gevangenisverleden van Syrië.
