synopsis

The Residence (A Wager For the Afterlife) was conceived during an extended artist residency in China (2009-10). The project initiated a collaboration with Chinese artist/architect Ma Wen. Sharing insights with him on the concept of creative clusters, Vermeir & Heiremans documented his practice as cultural producer.Using codes of fact and fiction, the film questions representation and mediation of art and architecture. The video focuses on the artist as entrepreneur in a global society that qualifies economy as the only measure of things. Offering a biting commentary on the contagious nature of capitalism, it elaborates on the symbiosis of art and value, life and economy.
