synopsis

Of particular interest to director Manon de Boer is the assumption that during the course of a film screening, the actual space of the viewer and the fictive space of the film are diffused by the viewer's subjective mechanisms of perception. Thus in Two Times 4'33" (which is based on John Cage's composition 4'33" and consists of three silent movements), the artist experiments with this theme by filming performances of the same piece, one with the sound of the audience and background noise, the second shown in complete silence. In this way de Boer explores the impact of the different recordings on the viewer.
Manon de Boer s’intéresse particulièrement à l’hypothèse que pendant une projection de film, l’espace réel du spectateur et l’espace fictif du film sont diffus par le mécanisme subjectif de perception du spectateur. Dans Two Times 4’33’’, qui trouve son origine dans la composition 4’33’’ (1952) de John Cage et consiste en trois mouvements silencieux, l’artiste expérimente ces thèmes. Elle a filmé deux représentations de la même scène, la première a été enregistrée avec le bruit de l’audience et le bruit ambiant, tandis que la deuxième est montrée dans un silence complet. De cette manière, de Boer analyse l’impact des différents enregistrements sur le spectateur. La fonction de la mémoire, qui pendant la deuxième performance a eu une influence sur la perception du spectateur et l’orientation de l’espace, joue dès lors un rôle déterminant. Dans un second temps, les spectateurs donnent leurs impressions sur eux-mêmes et sur leur propre perception du temps et de l’espace.
