A remake of a 1958 art film Under The White Maskby Paul Haesaerts, in which the filmmakers reshape elements into a film that Haesaerts could have made.

synopsis

Under The White Mask is a remake of a 1958 art film by Paul Haesaerts, known for his work on Picasso and art documentaries. Our remake - in the style of Gayatri Spivak’s affirmative sabotage – imagines what the masks (which were previously objectified in Haesaert’s film) would say. It was the occasion to translate for the first time Aimé Césaire’s 'discourse on colonialism' in Lingala which is still a topical mirror for Europe. Moreover, by limiting our remake only to elements that were already there in 1958, our film becomes the film Haesaerts could have made.
Sous le masque blanc s'agit d'un remontage du documentaire artistique 'Sous le masque noir’ de 1958 de Paul Haesaerts. Le film de Haesaerts (1901-1974) porte sur les objets d'art et utilitaires congolais. Le film éducatif de Haesaerts avait beau être formellement novateur, son contenu était stéréotypé. Le film, Sous le masque blanc, ne parle pas sur les masques, mais ceux-ci regardent et parlent. Ils le font au travers d'un texte du poète, penseur et homme politique Aimé Césaire. Pour l'Europe, ce texte est un miroir confrontant et toujours d'une grande actualité. Ce texte tout comme la musique existaient déjà lorsque Haesaerts a réalisé son film en 1958.
Onder het witte masker is een hermontage van de kunstdocumentaire Onder het zwarte masker uit 1958 van Paul Haesaerts. De film van Haesaerts (1901-1974) gaat over Congolese kunst- en gebruiksvoorwerpen. Haesaerts’ educatieve film was misschien vormelijk vernieuwend, maar de inhoud was stereotiep. In de film Onder het witte masker wordt niet óver de maskers gesproken, maar ze kijken en spreken terug. Dat doen ze met een tekst van de poëet, denker en politicus Aimé Césaire. Deze tekst is voor Europa een confronterende en nog uiterst actuele spiegel. Zowel deze tekst als de muziek waren er al toen Haesaerts zijn film in 1958 maakte.
