synopsis

Shot in a direct, fly-on-the-wall style, the documentary Waiting for August explores the life of 15-year-old Georgiana Halmac who lives with her six siblings in a social housing block on the outskirts of Bacau, Romania. While their mother is away earning a living in Italy, Georgiana is catapulted into the role of head of the family and finds her adolescence cut brutally short. The film was the winner of the Best International Feature Award at Toronto's Hot Docs in 2014.
Tandis que leur mère est partie travailler en Italie pour subvenir à leurs besoins, Georgiana, quinze ans, s'occupe de ses six frères et sœurs dans la banlieue de Bacau en Roumanie. Inspirée par sa propre douleur quant à une séparation similaire, la cinéaste brosse un portrait nuancé et tendre de ces enfants aussi courageux que forcément fragilisés par cette situation, en attendant l'été.
Georgiana Halmac wordt deze winter 15. Ze woont met haar zes broers en zusjes in een sociale woning in het Roemeense Bacau. Haar moeder Liliana werkt in Turijn en keert niet terug voor de zomer, waardoor Georgiana verplicht is om tijdelijk als gezinshoofd te fungeren. Die verantwoordelijkheid beëindigt haar puberteit. Georgiana zit gevangen tussen haar eigen adolescentie en al wat er van haar wordt verwacht. Ze improviseert, met de de telefoongesprekken met haar moeder als enige, vage richtlijn.
Intieme scènes uit het dagelijks leven van Georgiana en haar broers en zussen tonen ons hoe de kinderen de realiteit te lijf gaan, met hun verbeeldingskracht en ervaring. Maar hoe fris en verrassend hun vindingrijkheid ook is, het evenwicht blijkt bij wijlen erg fragiel.
