synopsis

Freedom is a universal concept. But what if radicals in the name of Allah destroy that freedom? When Arabs Danced evokes the recent history of the Muslim world and the effects of the ideological turnaround on an international group of artists. Do they stubbornly continue their own art form, do they fight for their freedom of expression or does self-censorship seep into their work under the pressure of the outside world or their own community? Starting from a personal story, namely his shame at the belly dancing of his mother, filmmaker Jawad Rhalib searches for answers by following different artists during the creation of new work, from Belgian theatre-makers who struggle with Houllebecq's Submission to a group of young people from the contemporary Egyptian dance scene.
La liberté est un concept universel. Mais que se passe-t-il si des radicaux détruisent cette liberté au nom d'Allah ? When Arabs Danced évoque l'histoire récente du monde musulman et les effets de ce revirement idéologique sur un groupe international d'artistes. Continuent-ils obstinément à pratiquer leur propre forme d'art, se battent-ils pour leur liberté d'expression ou l'autocensure s'infiltre-t-elle dans leur travail sous la pression du monde extérieur ou de leur propre communauté ? Partant d'une histoire personnelle, à savoir la honte provoquée par la danse du ventre de sa mère, le cinéaste Jawad Rhalib cherche des réponses en suivant différents artistes lors de la création d'une nouvelle œuvre, passant des metteurs en scène belges en lutte avec Soumission d'Houllebecq à un groupe de jeunes de la danse égyptienne contemporaine. Bien que ce documentaire créatif explore différentes disciplines artistiques, la danse demeure centrale, en tant que représentation de la voix libre intérieure, de l'indicible, de la résistance.

When Arabs Danced evoceert de recente geschiedenis van de moslimwereld en de effecten van de ideologische ommekeer op een internationale groep kunstenaars. Blijven ze koppig hun eigen kunstvorm verderzetten, vechten ze voor de vrijheid van meningsuiting of sijpelt er onder de druk van de buitenwereld of de eigen gemeenschap toch zelfcensuur in hun werk? Vertrekkend van een persoonlijk verhaal, namelijk zijn schaamte voor het buikdansen van zijn moeder, gaat filmmaker Jawad Rhalib op zoek naar antwoorden door verschillende artiesten te volgen tijdens de creatie van nieuw werk, van Belgische theatermakers die worstelen met Houllebecqs Soumission tot een groepje jongeren uit de hedendaagse Egyptische dansscène. Hoewel deze creatieve documentaire verschillende kunstdisciplines exploreert, staat de dans centraal, als verzinnebeelding van de innerlijke vrije stem, van het onzegbare, van het verzet.
