In the 1920s, a murder divides the rural community of Beemen, not far from Bruges.

One night in November 1926, Hector De Zutter disappears. In the days and weeks that follow, rumours circulate that he may have been murdered. The rural community of Beemen is already divided, when his body is found in a canal. Now his sister, Julienne De Zutter, starts looking for witnesses, and suspects. She is helped by the publisher of a local newspaper who has taken an interest in the crime.
