EN - Having buried their father in Istanbul, 28-year-old Timur and his two brothers, Ediz (36) and Bora (16), return to Ghent. The three brothers resume their lives but need to find a new balance. While Ediz plays the dominant father and Bora does silly things with the wrong friends, Timur tries to fulfil his father’s dream of playing the trumpet in a brass band. Sarah, Timur's girlfriend, thinks it’s cool, until she realises how little he seems to notice her now…

NL - Nadat ze hun vader hebben begraven in Istanbul, keren Timur (28) en zijn twee broers, Ediz (36) en Bora (16), terug naar Gent. Hun moeder blijft achter in Istanbul. De drie broers hervatten hun leven maar moeten op zoek naar een nieuw evenwicht. Terwijl Ediz de dominante vader speelt en Bora met verkeerde vrienden domme dingen doet, probeert Timur zijn vaders droom te realiseren nl. trompet spelen bij een fanfare. Sarah, de vriendin van Timur, vindt dat cool, tot ze merkt dat hij amper nog oog heeft voor haar… Turquaze brengt een ontwapenend eerlijke kroniek van een Turkse familie in Gent… Turks voor beginners!

FR - Après avoir enterré leur père à Istanbul, Timur (28 ans) et ses deux frères, Ediz (36 ans) et Bora (16 ans), rentrent à Gand. Leur mère est restée à Istanbul. Les trois frères reprennent leur vie mais doivent tenter de trouver un nouvel équilibre. Alors qu'Ediz joue le rôle du père dominant et que Bora fait des choses stupides avec de mauvaises fréquentations, Timur tente de réaliser le rêve de son père, à savoir jouer de la trompette dans une fanfare. Sarah, la petite amie de Timur, aime cela jusqu'à ce qu'elle remarque qu'il ne s'intéresse presque plus à elle… Turquaze est une chronique honnête et désarmante d'une famille turque de Gand… Le Turc pour les débutants!

Bullhead scores at Flanders Film Awards

Bullhead, Michaël R Roskam's feature film debut, cashed in six of its eight nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, at this year's Flanders Film Awards. Hans Van Nuffel's Oxygen was the second largest winner with two awards. The Flanders Film Awards were presented at the closing night of the fifth Ostend Film Fest.

Matthias Schoenaerts in 'Bullhead'Bullhead received the lion's share of the major awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Debut, Best Actor (Matthias Schoenaerts), Best Supporting Actor (Jeroen Perceval) and Best DOP (Nicolas Karakatsanis). Oxygen also received two awards: Best Screenplay (Hans Van Nuffel and Jean-Claude Van Rijckeghem) and Best Supporting Actress (Anemone Valcke). Other awards went to Vanja D'Alcantara's Beyond the Steppes (Best Actress for Agnieszka Grochowska) and Turquaze (Best Music).

Oxygen, Bullhead lead Flanders Film Awards noms

Hans Van Nuffel’s Oxygen and Michaël R Roskam’s Bullhead head this year’s list of nominations for the Flanders Film Awards, collecting nine and eight noms respectively in ten categories. The awards ceremony takes place on Saturday 10 September at the fifth Ostend Film Festival.

Shanghai selects Flanders trio

Kadir Balci’s feature debut Turqauze and Alex Stockman’s Pulsar have been selected for the Panorama section at this year’s 14th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF, 11-19 June). Annabel Verbeke’s VAF Wildcard-winning graduation doc Children of the Sea is also invited. All three titles have already toured the international festival circuit, with stops at destinations such as Hong Kong, Locarno, Montréal, Los Angeles and Palm Springs.

And when the mysterious hacker seems to be intentionally screwing up Samuel’s life and his relationship, paranoia kicks in. In Turquaze three brothers return to Belgium after having buried their father in Istanbul. They resume their lives but need to find a new balance. While Ediz plays the dominant father and Bora does silly things with the wrong friends, Timur tries to fulfil his father’s dream: playing the trumpet in a brass band. In Children of the Sea, Annabel Verbeke closely follows the lifes of the children at the Ibis school, established about a century ago to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Transilvania fetes 10th edition the Belgian way

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF, 3 - 19 June) presents a Belgian Focus containing seven Flemish and seven French-speaking Belgian films.

Oxygen selected for Official Competition at TIFFOne of the titles, Hans Van Nuffel's feature debut Oxygen, also made it into competition. Artistic director of the festival, Mihaj Chirilov, describes the film as an 'intimate film that puts under the microscope individual destines in extreme circumstances'. Since its Montreal World Film Festival debut last year, where it won the Grand Prize of the Americas, Oxygen garnered an impressive number of festival selections and kudos.

22nd of May, Turquaze and Cat to Hong Kong

Koen Mortier’s 22nd of May and Kadir Balci’s Turquaze have been invited to this year’s 35th edition of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (20 March-5 April). Both films will screen in the World Cinema programme. Also selected is the animated feature A Cat in Paris by Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli, which is to have a gala premiere at Hong Kong.

Still from TurquazeKadir Balci’s Turquaze had its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival, and also toured other fests such as Hamburg and Palm Springs. Producer is Dirk Impens for Menuet. International sales are handled by Delphis Films. The festival describes Turquaze as “Realistic yet warm, tense yet romantic, this is a fresh and uplifting spin on the modern issue of multiculturalism”.
