In this documentary Klara Van Es explores the effect of migration on someone's identity, discovering how the transition from one society to another affects, even distorts, self-perception and identity.

synopsis

Today, the ground floor at 17 Carnot Street serves as a prayer house. In days gone by, this venue was known as Ciné Rubens, one of Belgium's largest and most modern film theatres. The five-story facade above comprises balconies and bay windows exuding a certain fin-de-siècle charm, despite a scattering of satellite dishes. In the entrance hall, the names on the rows of letterboxes and doorbells provide an obvious clue as to the many different nationalities living under this roof: Romanians, Moroccans, Burkinabes, Nepalese, Armenians and Tibetans. Almost all the tenants in this building are migrants in search of an identity.
Ooit zat op Carnotstraat 17 in Antwerpen Ciné Rubens, de grootste en modernste bioscoop van België. Internationale filmsterren schreden er over de rode loper. Nu wonen op hetzelfde adres diverse migrantenfamilies onder één dak. Schotelantennes en waslijnen versieren het doorleefde gebouw. De bewoners van het pand vertellen over migratie, identiteit en wortelen in de samenleving. Ondertussen mijmeren aan de overkant van de straat de bezoekers van het Vlaamse volkscafé over het blanke verleden van de buurt, terwijl de klanten van de Afrikaanse kapperszaak het veelkleurige heden bespreken.
De jazzy soundtrack brengt het gebouw tot leven en verbindt de bewogen verhalen van de bewoners.
