synopsis

Prevention plays a growing role in mental health. Instead of curing people, the objective is to prevent disorders by collecting enormous amounts of data. This disquieting documentary looks at cases from the Netherlands, Norway and the USA, in which children and adults are constantly measured and questioned, for their own good. But what gets lost in this quest for our optimal selves?
Preventie speelt een steeds grotere rol in 'mental health'. In plaats van mensen te genezen, is het doel om stoornissen te voorkomen door data te verzamelen. In Nederland, Noorwegen en de VS zien we verschillende stadia van preventie: van kinderen op een basisschool die een 'vroege interventie' krijgen om angststoornissen op latere leeftijd te voorkomen, tot een jongeman die een nieuwe psychose probeert te voorkomen. Een volgend niveau wordt bereikt in Florida waar een stad zonder wrijvingen wordt gebouwd om alle bewoners gelukkig te maken. De hoofdpersonages worden voortdurend gemeten en ondervraagd, in hun eigen belang, maar wat gaat er verloren in deze zoektocht naar ons optimale zelf?
