Moldavian mothers and families separated by economic migration develop a habit that would come to transform post-Soviet Moldova: the exchange of large cardboard boxes filled with gifts and videotapes. A film created from memories, sensations and longing.

synopsis

In the early 90’s, women left Moldova in large numbers to provide for their families. Unable to return home, they searched for ways to stay in touch - exchanging boxes filled with gifts. This gesture became a ritual among many families. Video cameras allowed these families to share glimpses of their moments apart and these recordings were often included in the boxes. As technology advanced, the quality of the images improved but contrarily, the relationships became increasingly distant. Through these intimate private archives Love is Not an Orange depicts the fragility of family bonds through the eyes of mothers and children who were forced to live apart in order to survive.
Begin jaren '90 verlieten veel moeders Moldavië om geld te verdienen voor hun gezin. Om hun fysieke aanwezigheid te vervangen en hun afwezigheid minder pijnlijk te maken, communiceerden ze met elkaar door middel van dozen gevuld met geschenken. Dit gebaar werd een ritueel onder vele families. Met behulp van videocamera's deelden ze hun levens en deze beelden werden vaak toegevoegd aan de kartonnen dozen. Naarmate de technologie vorderde, verbeterde de beeldkwaliteit, maar de relaties werden steeds afstandelijker. Via deze intieme privé-archieven verbeeldt Love is Not an Orange de kwetsbaarheid van familiebanden door de ogen van moeders en dochters die gedwongen werden apart te leven om te overleven.
