Little is known about life in the Nigerian community in Europe. Nollywood Abroad lifts the veil via a combination of four thematic threads: immigration, prostitution, religion and... filmmaking.

synopsis

John is a Nigerian immigrant living in Antwerp. Like most of his compatriates, he is a great fan of Nollywood movies, the third largest film industry in the world. John dreams of a career as a famous and respected Nollywood filmmaker and of building a life in Europe. But then he is arrested and convicted of inciting prostitution and of complicity in trafficking. After serving his sentence, he decides to make his story into a film. The manner in which he presents his tale ultimately reveals what led to his conviction. But is John really guilty? And will making this film help him to regain the respect he craves?
John est un immigré nigérien qui vit à Anvers. Comme la plupart de ses compatriotes, il est un grand fan des films de Nollywood, la troisième plus grande industrie cinématographique au monde. John rêve d’une carrière en tant que réalisateur célèbre et respecté de films nollywoodiens, et de construire sa vie en Europe. Mais c’est alors qu’il se trouve impliqué dans une affaire étrange. Il est arrêté et accusé d’incitation à la prostitution et de complicité dans le trafic d’êtres humains. Après avoir purgé sa peine, il décide de faire un film de sa propre histoire. La manière dont John présente son histoire révèle finalement ce qui l’a mené à sa condamnation. Mais John est-il réellement coupable ? Et ce film l’aidera-t-il à regagner le respect auquel il aspire ? Nous connaissons peu de choses à propos de la communauté nigérienne en Europe. Nollywood Abroad lève le voile en combinant quatre thématiques : l’immigration, la prostitution, la religion et... la réalisation.
