Centring on the Filipino women deployed abroad to work as domestic workers or nannies, Overseas explores the question of modern servitude in our globalized world while emphasising these women's determination to face the ordeals that awaits them.

synopsis

In the Philippines, women are deployed abroad to work as domestic workers or nannies. In order to do so, they frequently leave their own children behind before throwing themselves into the unknown. In one of the many training centres dedicated to domestic work that can be found in the Philippines, a group of trainees are getting ready to face both homesickness and the possible abuses that lie ahead. During role-playing exercises, they alternatively take on the roles of both employee and employer. Bordering on fiction, Overseas brings to light the question of modern servitude in our globalized world while emphasizing these women's determination, sisterhood and the strategies they find to face the ordeals that awaits them.
Aux Philippines, on de_ploie les femmes en masse à l’étranger comme aides ménagères ou nounous. Elles laissent souvent derrière elles leurs propres enfants, avant de se jeter dans l’inconnu. Dans un centre de formation au travail domestique, comme tant d’autres aux Philippines, un groupe de candidates au départ se préparent au mal du pays et aux maltraitances qui pourraient les atteindre. Lors d’exercices de jeux de rôles, les femmes se mettent tant dans la peau de l’employée que des employeu.r.se.s. Aux abords de la fiction, Overseas traite de la servitude moderne de notre monde globalisé, tout en révélant la détermination de ces femmes, leur sororité et les stratégies mises en place face aux épreuves que leur réserve l’avenir.
In de Filipijnen worden vrouwen in het buitenland ingezet als huishoudelijk personeel of oppas. Om dat te doen, laten ze vaak hun eigen kinderen achter, voor ze zichzelf in het onbekende gooien. In één van de vele trainingscentra voor huishoudelijk personeel die in de Filipijnen gevestigd zijn, wordt een groep leerlingen klaargestoomd om zowel heimwee als mogelijk misbruik dat hen te wachten staat het hoofd te bieden. Tijdens rollenspel-oefeningen spelen ze afwisselend de rol van werknemer en werkgever. Grenzend aan fictie werpt Overseas de vraag op over moderne slavernij in onze geglobaliseerde wereld, terwijl de nadruk wordt gelegd op de vastberadenheid van deze vrouwen, hun zusterschap en de strategieën die ze vinden om de beproevingen die hen te wachten staan in de nabije toekomst het hoofd te bieden.
