Flanders quartet triumphs at Festroia

Four films from Flanders were presented with prizes during the awards ceremony of the Festroia International Film Festival in Portugal (7-16 June). Felix van Groeningen took home three awards for The Broken Circle Breakdown, while Joël Vanhoebrouck’s Brasserie Romantique, Peter Monsaert’s Offline and the short film Dura Lex by Anke Blondé were all awarded as well.

OfflineVan Groeningen’s intense drama The Broken Circle Breakdown not only won the Gold Dolphin for Best Film, but also took home the film critics’ FIPRESCI Prize as well as the SIGNIS Prize, awarded by the worldwide association of Catholic communication professionals.

Flanders shorts overflow Newport Beach

From April 25 till May 2 three animated as well as three narrative shorts from Flanders are screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California. Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s Oh Willy…, Little Ryan by Aad Verstraelen and Hisko Hulsing’sJunkyard, a co-production with Flanders, are in the running for Best Animated Short. The live action short films Dura Lex by Anke Blondé, Death of a Shadow by Tom Van Avermaet and Anthony Schatteman’s Kiss Me Softly were also added to the fest’s official line-up.

Aad Verstraelen's Little RyanScreening in the animation category is Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s much appraised stop motion short Oh Willy… Fifty-something Willy returns to the naturist community where he grew up to visit his dying mother. After her death he flees into the forest in confused sadness where he finds the motherly protection of a big gentle hairy beast.

Flanders foursome selected for Festroia’s competition

Four Flemish features have been selected for competition at the 29th Festroia International Film Festival in Portugal (7-16 June). Brasserie RomantiqueThe Broken Circle BreakdownOffline and Time of My Life are all in the running to take home some prizes. This year, the festival has also organised a focus on Belgium and pays homage to Flemish actor Jan Decleir.

Madly in LoveBoth Joel Vanhoebrouck’s Brasserie Romantique and Felix van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown screen as part of the fest’s official competition. Peter Monsaert’s directorial debut Offline is selected for the competitive First Works section, while Nic Baltazar is competing in the Man and His Environment category with Time of My Life.

Brothers, Dura Lex Big in Baghdad

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s VAF Wildcard-winning short Brothers grabbed the First Prize at this year’s fourth edition of the Baghdad International Film Festival (3-7 October). The third prize also went to a Flemish short: Anke Blondé’s Dura Lex.

The fest’s International Jury considered it ‘a film with a well-written script and a perfect dramatic structure, with strong characters, that is emotionally touching and full of tension.’

European New Talent Award for Dura Lex

Anke Blondé’s short film Dura Lex has won the European New Talent Award at the Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival (18-23 September) in Bristol, UK. After the recent awards in Palm Springs, this is the third international award forDura Lex. Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels also had reason to celebrate as their animated short, Oh Willy, grabbed the Animated Grand Prix at Encounters.

Still from Anke Blondé's Dura LexThe jury praised Dura Lex for its ‘refreshing perspective on the theme of illegal immigration’. The director’s ‘sense of character and timing’ and the film’s ‘darkly comic undertones’ were also high on the jury’s list of reasons to award the film. The award is sponsored by the University of the West of England and comes with a grant of €1,000.
