synopsis

Guy Moyaert and Luke Vermarcke leave together for the Belgian Congo in 1945. Luke will work on his father's plantation, while Guy is going to work for the colonial government. There is one woman in both their lives: Hélène. She chooses Luke. The war has taken its toll : corruption is evident in the relationship between church, big industries and government. Guy, who moves up in the colonial administration, comes face to face with this corruption. He clashes with Roland, manager of the local mine. The role of Alexis, the mission father, in this conflict is always ambiguous. Luke works hard to expand the plantation, but this only worsens his relationship with Hélène. Even the birth of their son cannot save their marriage.
Guy en Luc trekken in 1945, met een diploma van de Koloniale School op zak, naar Belgisch Kongo. Guy gaat er aan de slag als adjunct-gewestbeheerder, Luc en zijn vrouw Hélène nemen de plantage van Lucs vader over. De kennismaking met het totaal verziekte Kongo is hard. De spanning tussen blank en zwart is te snijden. Bovendien krijgt Guy af te rekenen met Roland, de opportunistische directeur van de mijn. Luc heeft dan weer enkel oog voor zijn werk en ziet daardoor de noden van zijn gezin en de snel evoluerende gebeurtenissen niet. Terwijl Kongo zich moeizaam losmaakt van de kolonisator, moeten ambitie en idealen wijken voor verpletterende ontnuchtering...
