A co-creative film in the form of a chain letter, made by three filmmakers with different skin tones. Prism questions the neutrality of the camera and its ability to tackle other inequalities in society that are based on skin colour.

synopsis

Among the many ways that racism is entrenched in film culture is a technical one: the lighting for movie cameras has always been calibrated for white skin, with other production tools reflecting the same bias throughout cinema history. Three filmmakers explore the literal, theoretical, and philosophical dimensions of that reality. In a series of thematically linked, provocative discussions and interrogations, Eléonore Yameogo from Burkina Faso, Belgian An van. Dienderen, and Rosine Mbakam from Cameroon chart the making of their own film, while exploring the cinematic construction of whiteness and how this relates to power, privilege, and the myth of objectivity.
Pour Prism, la cinéaste belge An van Dienderen a invité Rosine Mbakam, Camerounaise basée à Bruxelles, et Eléonore Yameogo, Burkinabée basée à Paris, à travailler ensemble sur un film dans lequel leurs différentes couleurs de peau servent de point de départ pour explorer leurs diverses expériences avec les limites du médium. Les médias photographiques sont technologiquement et idéologiquement biaisés, favorisant la peau caucasienne. Le film problématise l’objectivité de la caméra et son inégalité de pouvoir pour aborder d’autres inégalités de la société basées sur la couleur de la peau.
Voor Prism nodigde Belgisch filmmaker An van. Dienderen de in Brussel wonende Rosine Mbakam uit Kameroen en de in Parijs gevestigde Eléonore Yameogo uit Burkina Faso uit. Samen maken ze een film waarin de verschillen in hun huidskleur dienen als vertrekpunt om hun ervaringen met de beperkingen van het medium te verkennen. Fotografische media zijn technologisch en ideologisch bevooroordeeld en begunstigen de witte huid. Prism problematiseert de neutraliteit en machtsongelijkheid van audiovisuele media om andere ongelijkheden in de samenleving op basis van huidskleur te bekritiseren.
