synopsis

The Swell tells the contemporary story of what would happen in the Netherlands and Belgium if the dikes and dams were to collapse. Five million people live on land that is way below sea level. What will remain of these areas if a flood were to occur? The weather in the Netherlands has been increasingly fierce, and everyone is braced for impact. Could this be the super storm that hits the country only once every 10,000 years? In the darkest of scenarios, that would mean a catastrophe for inhabitants of the coastal provinces. Millions of people would faced with an impossible choice and would be in danger of their lives when the levees break.We follow six of these people in a compelling and emotional narrative mosaic. The Swell is about what life-threatening conditions do to relationships, about a national government under pressure and the resilience of a nation. And the storm continues to have a hold on the characters once the tide has turned. How do you start over when everything has been destroyed?
Als een grote storm op Nederland af komt, moet premier Hans Kreuger het besluit nemen: kunnen we vier miljoen mensen evacueren? Maar de storm kan nog afbuigen en de evacuatie van burgers, ziekenhuizen en gevangenissen duurt zeker vier dagen.
In de gevangenis zit Ronnie de Gught in de isoleercel in de kelder. Als de evacuatie begint, ziet hij een weg naar de vrijheid. Hij gaat meteen naar zijn vrouw die voor hun kinderen zorgt. Zij wonen vlakbij de spuikom in Bredene waar het hoge zeewater hen bedreigt.
Autohandelaar Robert Wienesse en zijn vrouw Marion zijn door hun materiële welvaart verwend geraakt. Als ze voor het water op de vlucht gaan, leren ze voor het eerst met grote tegenslag omgaan. Hun vlucht brengt hen naar een vluchtelingenkamp en naar familie van Robert die in het droge deel van Nederland woont. Maar hoelang ben je welkom bij familie als je je niet als gasten gedraagt?
